Stephanie Rose (April 1943, New York City – March 2023, Basel, Switzerland, was an American painter known for dramatic non-narrative abstract paintings composed of diverse passages including representational imagery and later portraiture in which the highly recognizable subjects appear in settings related to her work in abstraction; both, she has said, involve a "combination of historical and existential perspectives". Her first solo exhibition since 2012 was held in April 2025 at Philip Douglas Fine Art entitled Stephanie Rose: Seven Discourses On Post Modernism. Rose’s reputation was established as an abstract painter. She was quoted: "Overall, the pivotal aspect for communicating meaning in my work is the investment of a theatrical sense of psychological presence in the paintings". James K. Kettlewell, curator emeritus, The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls, NY & professor emeritus history of art, Skidmore College said of her in 2012, "The extraordinary art of Stephanie Rose occupies a critical place in Modern/Postmodern art history. Utterly original, her style effects a perfect synthesis between these two opposing philosophies of art. Content is intimately bound to form". Rose had numerous solo & group exhibitions and was included in numerous group exhibitions between 1974 and 2025 including solos shows with Betty Cunningham Gallery, E.M. Donahue, Susan Caldwell Gallery, Getler Paul, fiction/nonfiction, The Albany Institute of History And Art, ACA Gallery, The Denver Art Museum, The Neuberger Art Museum, Bennington College, The Dactyly Foundation and Nicole Fiacco Gallery and many more.
