David Becker's first solo exhibition with the gallery entitled 'The Americans' was held in June/July 2025. The Americans was a new body of work for Becker. In these new paintings mannequin-like creatures with giant eyes and biomorphic/mechanical forms present themselves within feathered cloud-like backgrounds. Figurative forms transmogrify into quasi mechanical shapes inferring biomorphic & Surrealist complexities. Fear may be present, but at the same time a tone of nonchalance is enforced by a muted palette of grays, browns and painterly organic hues. David Becker was born in 1950 and is based in Columbia County New York. His approach is rooted in drawing, working into a process process which leads to a subject. He takes cues from an affinity for Spanish Renaissance painters and uses the earthy tones that cue a feeling of old world Europe; but his compositions are squarely mired within 20th & 21st century conflict. This is not a deliberate choice the artist states, rather an evolution of subject matter born out of the act of drawing and interpreted feelings, forms & ideas revealed from his psyche. Becker who lived for a year in England found influences that are diverse and include British Post War painter Richard Hamilton, Ralph Steadman, early drawings of David Hockney, sculptural forms of Barbara Hepworth and German painter/illustrator Heinrich Kley inspired mechanical forms of the late 19th & early 20th century.
